Can Saffron Really Cure My Macular Degeneration?

Recently, several of our patients have asked the doctor about an article published in the Buffalo News WNY Refresh Section. It was based off an article posted by the People’s Pharmacy, which stated “A reader got great results taking Saffron for age-related macular degeneration, along with AREDS vitamins”. If you are interested in reading both articles in their entirety, the links are below.

Contrary to these claims by a single reader, there is no known proof that saffron can cure macular degeneration. According to the American Society of Retina Specialists, the only proven effective treatments are intravitreal anti-VEGF injections and AREDS vitamin supplements. In addition, saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world! While there are several health benefits derived from the spice’s antioxidant containing compounds, there is no proof that it is an effective agent in fixing your macular degeneration.
