PATIENT TALK: Joanne

In today’s session of “Patient Talk”, we’d like to introduce you to Joanne. She was a clinical lab inspector for many years, but has since retired.

Prior to coming to our office, Joanne was seen by her general ophthalmologist for a routine eye exam. Even though Joanne was not experiencing any symptoms or vision changes, her doctor had noticed some bleeding behind her right eye, and sent her for further evaluation by Dr. Notaro, who specializes in retina care.

Your situation was rather unique, could you walk me through it?

After I was receiving injections from Dr. Notaro, I ended up having an emergency, and of course, it had to happen on a Saturday. I called Dr. Notaro, and she came in on her day off, and ended up driving me right to the hospital where she could do surgery. She spent three days taking care of me, even though it was her weekend off! I am 86 years old, and have been working in the medical field since 1955, and I have never met a doctor who would do that for a patient. My eye has been saved, and I am indebted to Dr. Notaro for life because of that.

What was you experience with Dr. Notaro like?

Before my emergency, I had received several injections in my right eye for the bleeding. As you could imagine, a needle to the eye does not sound pleasant at all, and I was very scared. Dr. Notaro was so friendly when she came in to do it, and we were just having a normal conversation when she did the injection so quickly and efficiently that I didn’t even know what had hit me! After everything I’ve gone through with the injections and the emergency surgery, I have so much respect for her and would consider her an A++ professional.

If you had to tell someone about Dr. Notaro, what would you say?

That’s easy, I would just tell them my story! If I could nominate Dr. Notaro for an award, I would. She is so selfless and needs to be acknowledged. She gave up an entire weekend for me which says a lot about her.
